One of five daughters, Popo Flanigan's Dad advised "learn to transcribe and you'll always have work; art may not bring you a good job". Despite Dad's advice, Popo spent her mid life designing and selling fine jewelry at her very popular shop, Popo & Co. (located in Flourtown, Pa.). which segued into her dream coming true; which was to be a fine arts painter.
If you happen to see an open screen door at either of her studios, Brigantine, or Naples, Popo more than welcomes you to stop in to say "Hi" pick up a brush and "dive in". Her demo classes are invaluable and packed with information! You'll often see her out and about with a camera in hand or tooling around town on her green scooter, in her all familiar paint spattered clothing looking for inspiration! Popo donated her favorite studio pants to the Mayor of Naples as a one of a kind auction item for the new Children's Hospital in Southwest Florida, which caused a fun bidding frenzy!
In 2007 she started a plein air group ,
the Brigantine Beach Art Group and continues to encourage emerging artists to follow their dream.
Remember the open screen door policy and stop in....after all, .it's SMILEVILLE!!!
Using a prescription of 7 colors of paint (white, two blues, two reds and two yellows) , filbert brushes and most any surface, the artist holds her brush like a golf club , double or triple loads her brush and the amazing colors just "happen". Making people smile, through use of color, pattern and everyday subject matter, is what drives the artist to continue her love of craft.
She sites her inspiration coming from students and art classes , museums and workshops throughout europe and the US, conversations with fellow artists, patrons, and just staying aware.
